NHTSA on Child Passenger Safety Week 2023

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is gearing up for Child Passenger Safety Week next month. This year, Child Passenger Safety Week will run from September 17th through the 23rd. The last day of Child Passenger Safety Week will be National Seat Check Saturday, which will call attention to the importance of having car seats checked by professionals to ensure they’re properly installed.

With school starting back up, it’s important to have conversations about improving child passenger safety. Sadly, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children. Thankfully, there have been incredible safety advances in technology for protecting children in passenger vehicles. There is a wide variety of car seats for parents to choose from, whether infant sized, toddler sized or booster seats for bigger kids.

Child Passenger Crash Stats

  • In 2021, there were 710 children (kids under the age of 13) killed in passenger vehicles.
  • There were more than 100,000 kids injured in crashes in 2021.
  • In 2021, more than a third (36 percent) of kids under the age of 13 who died in passenger vehicle crashes were unrestrained at the time of the crash.

Get Your Car Seat Checked

If you don’t want to wait until National Seat Check Saturday, you can get your seat checked out sooner. Just contact your local California Highway Patrol office to find out when and where you can get yours checked for free. Car seats are amazing, but they only work when they’re the right size for your child, properly installed, and the straps and buckles are all adjusted to fit your child.
