NHTSA on National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently gearing up for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Throughout the Month of April, the NHTSA will be working to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving on U.S. roadways. They will be running campaigns on social media outlets, television and the radio. Additionally, various law enforcement agencies will be stepping up enforcement efforts during the month-long campaign.

Crashes caused by distracted driving are 100-percent preventable. If you’re looking at a phone, you’re not watching the road. Drivers need to be attentive and paying attention to the task of driving at all times when they’re behind the wheel. Motorists need to make a commitment to distraction-free driving during the Month of April and all year long.

One Text or Call Could Wreck It All

Officials with the NHTSA want motorists to know that One Text or Call Could Wreck it All. Even just reading a text message can take your eyes off of the road for a dangerous amount of time. Since texting is a manual, cognitive and visual distraction, it’s a particularly risky behavior behind the wheel. If you need to make a call or text, you should wait until you get to your destination.

Making a commitment to distraction-free driving is a great way to improve your personal safety behind the wheel and improve safety for all of the roadway users you share the road with. That text or call can wait. Turn your phone on silent, and put it in the backseat where you won’t be tempted to reach it.
