NHTSA on The Latest in Driver Assistance Technologies

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is getting the word out about the latest developments in driver assistance technologies. According to the NHTSA, 42,939 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2021. Most of these crashes were caused by human error, which is why automakers have been diligently working to bring driver assistance technologies to the market.

Officials with the NHTSA want to help consumers learn more about these technologies, so they’re prepared when they’re getting ready to go car shopping. Listed below are just a few of the latest safety technologies being made available in certain new vehicles.

Tech Overview in New Cars

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning

Forward Collision Warning

Forward collision warning systems help to monitor the vehicle’s speed and the speed of the vehicle in front of it. It can also measure the distance between the vehicles, and if the vehicles get too close together, the system will warn the driver of an impending crash. This system doesn’t take action. It only warns the driver.

Lane Departure Warning

A lane departure warning system monitors the markings of the lanes, and alerts the driver when it detects the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. This is only a warning, and doesn’t take action to avoid a crash.

Rear Cross Traffic Warning

A rear cross traffic warning system can alert the driver of potential hazards and collisions while in reverse. These hazards may be outside of what is in the typical and limited view of the backup camera.

Blind Spot Warning

The blind spot warning systems can alert a driver with audio or visual warnings if there are vehicles in adjacent lanes that the driver may not be able to see during an upcoming lane change.
