NHTSA Park Outside Orders for Kia and Hyundai Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about a consumer alert associated with select Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Apparently, Kia Motors America and Hyundai Motor America are recommending that owners of certain model year 2014-2016 Kia Sportage, 2016-2018 Kia K900 and 2016-2018 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures due to a fire risk, even if the vehicle is turned off.

Risk of Engine Compartment Fire in Kia and Hyundai Vehicles

Apparently, Kia and Hyundai have identified an increasing risk of an engine compartment fire on these vehicles. At this time, the cause appears to be unknown. Manufacturers believe it may be an electrical component in the anti-lock brake system. The system may experience a short circuit that can increase the risk of fire when the vehicle is being driven or when it is parked.

Currently, Kia and Hyundai are taking steps to notify owners by mail with instructions about how to take their vehicles in for free repairs. The repair involves installing a fuse designed to mitigate the risk of fire. If you have one of these model year vehicles, make sure you park it outside and away from any structures or other vehicles. Check the Kia or Hyundai website to find out if your vehicle is being impacted by this recall.

What To Do If Your Car is Being Recalled

If your vehicle isn’t being impacted by this particular recall, it doesn't hurt to go ahead and check to see if it’s being recalled for any other reason. It only takes a few minutes to use the NHTSA’s VIN Lookup Tool to see if your vehicle is under recall. If it’s under recall, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on what to do and contact your local dealership to schedule a free repair. Recalls are issued due to immediate safety issues, so don’t delay if your car is being recalled.
