NHTSA’s Drivewell Toolkit for Senior Drivers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019, there were 54.1 million people who were over the age of 65 in the U.S. That’s 16 percent of the population. With a large aging Baby Boomer demographic, the NHTSA has a variety of great resources for older drivers and their families. The Drivewell Toolkit is one of those resources.

The Drivewell Toolkit is a great resource for anybody who directly works with older adults. It can be difficult to know where to start when talking to an older driver about their safety behind the wheel. Age-related changes can increase gradually, and it’s not as simple as just handing over the keys. Issues related to independence, mobility and safety all need to be considered.

The Drivewell Toolkit

  • Includes information about issues related to older drivers and later-life independence and mobility.
  • Includes planning and implementation of public information events for older drivers, their families and loved ones, and other community members and organizations.
  • Includes information on how to evaluate the effectiveness of older driver public information events, community understanding of safe mobility issues and progress in mobilizing community members, including older adults, to take action.

The Drivewell Toolkit is just one of the resources available on the NHTSA’s website. They also have downloadable handouts about a variety of health issues facing older drivers. They have information about driving with arthritis, macular degeneration, sleep apnea and several other age-related health challenges that commonly face older drivers.
