NHTSA’s Halloween Anti Drunk Driving Campaign

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is preparing to get the word out about their annual Halloween Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign. Halloween and the Halloween holiday weekend time period is well known for having a spike in drunk driving crashes. Law enforcement agencies in California and throughout the U.S. will be stepping up their enforcement efforts to catch drunk drivers on Halloween too.

If you plan on celebrating Halloween with alcohol, make sure you have a safe ride home lined up ahead of time. Designating a driver is a great way to plan for a safe ride home. It also never hurts to have a backup plan. If your ride falls through, you don’t want to be scrambling to find a way home at the end of the night. A backup plan can be as simple as a ridesharing app or pre-programing a cab company’s number into your phone.

Halloween Drunk Driving Crashes by The Numbers

  • During Halloween night during the years from 2017 to 2021, there were 159 people killed in drunk driving crashes in the U.S.
  • In 2020, 58 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night.
  • In 2021, 38 people were killed on Halloween night in drunk-driving crashes.
  • Adults between the ages of 21 and 34 had the highest percentage (55 percent) of fatalities in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night in 2021.  Approximately one-third of all traffic crash deaths in the U.S. involved drunk drivers.
  • In 2021, there were 13,384 people killed in drunk driving crashes.

Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

This year, part of the campaign includes information about the dangers of buzzed driving. Even one drink can be one drink too many in certain circumstances. If you plan on drinking any alcohol at all, it’s a good idea to get a safe ride home. This Halloween and all year long, if you plan to drink alcohol, make sure to get a safe ride home.
