NHTSA’s Ways to Get Home Safely

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  (NHTSA) has some really great tips for how people can get home safely after they’ve made the right decision to not drive drunk or high. Obviously, one of the most popular ways to get home safely is by using a ride-sharing app or calling a taxi. Public transportation isn’t an option in all areas, and walking and riding scooters or bicycles are also options, but not generally recommended by safety experts for a few important reasons.

Ride-Sharing Safety Tips

The NHTSA recommends that you always check to make sure the license plate of the vehicle coming to pick you up matches the one you booked through the app. Whether you use Uber or Lyft, make sure you’re getting into the correct vehicle. It’s also important to look at the driver and ask their name, and make sure both of those things match who you booked on the app.

Equally important is making sure you’re in a safe pickup location. If possible, wait inside until your driver arrives. If that’s not possible, find a safe place that’s not too close to the roadway to wait. Make sure it’s well lit, and that there’s plenty of room for your driver to stop safely for pickup. Also, ask your driver to drop you off in a safe location too. Finally, buckle up. Wear your seatbelt no matter how far the drive is. Finally, make sure your driver is buckled up too.

Bicycles, Scooters and Walking After Drinking or Drugs

While a lot of people do choose to get on bicycles, scooters or to walk home after a night of drinking, there are some significant safety risks associated with each of those choices. Approximately 26 percent of the cyclists killed in 2017 crashes had been drinking. For a variety of reasons, scooters can also be a dangerous choice. Additionally, even being an intoxicated pedestrian puts you at risk of being injured or killed while walking on or beside a roadway, especially after dark.
