Take The Pledge to End Distracted Driving

Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are urging U.S. drivers to Take the Pledge to End Distracted Driving. Making a commitment to distraction-free driving is a great first step in helping to improve roadways in your community. Everybody’s worried about distracted drivers, but not everybody has stepped up to take the pledge.

We all know it can be hard to put the phone down. We have so much information coming at us at all times, but one place we shouldn’t allow distractions is behind the wheel. Whether you have trouble leaving work at work or you’re waiting to hear from somebody important, it’s never a good idea to use your mobile device behind the wheel.

Distracted Driving Takes Many Forms

Distracted driving can take many forms. Using a phone is just one type of distracted driving. Any task that takes your mind, eyes or hands off the task of driving is considered a distraction. In some cases, eating, fixing your hair or makeup, checking GPS directions or even changing radio stations can be dangerously distracting. Be aware of what distractions you might be engaging in when you get behind the wheel and eliminate them.

That Text Can Wait

First and foremost, put your phone on silent or engage the driving mode feature. Many phones now have a “driving mode” that will silence texts while you’re driving and send an automated text to whoever texted you that you’re driving. This is a great way to avoid the mental distraction of hearing your phone ding from an incoming text message.

Take The Pledge

Take the pledge to protect lives by never texting or talking on the phone while driving. Pledge to be a good passenger and speak out if the driver in your car is distracted. Pledge to encourage your friends and family to drive phone-free too. It’s a community effort that starts with each and every driver.
