NHTSA on Crashworthiness Pedestrian Protection Testing

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about their proposal of a new crashworthiness pedestrian protection testing program. This program would be aimed at helping to improve the safety for one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups on U.S. roadways.

The NHTSA is currently requesting public comment on their latest proposal to see what people think about the upcoming pedestrian crashworthiness tests. These tests are all about measuring how well vehicles protect people who are outside of the vehicle. This is part of an effort to help reduce pedestrian fatalities nationwide. These tests will also help to provide consumers with important information when they’re shopping for cars.

Improving Pedestrian Safety on U.S. Roadways

This proposal is part of a wider effort to help improve overall pedestrian safety on U.S. roadways. The test data will help to inform consumers who are shopping for vehicles and help to spur on additional safety developments in automotive manufacturing. Officials with the NHTSA plan to use check marks on their website to identify new model year vehicles that meet certain agency testing criteria standards. Consumers who are interested in improving pedestrian safety will be able to see which vehicles test well and meet current safety standards.

At this time, the NHTSA is also developing a proposed rule that will set safety standards for automatic emergency braking (AEB), which will include pedestrian AEB technology for newly manufactured light vehicles. These systems may help to avoid or mitigate crashes with pedestrians by automatically applying the brakes in the event of an emergency.
