In 2013, a man was driving in the slow lane of the US 101 South near Atascadero when he came upon a disabled, blacked out truck in the roadway. He could not switch lanes and thus collided into the truck at 60 mph, sustaining permanent neck injuries as a result of the impact that led to cervical disc replacement surgery and will require at least two more surgeries and a lifetime of pain management treatments. Although defendants denied responsibility for the collision, after years of investigation, the Harris team discovered independent witnesses to the accident who confirmed that the truck was street-racing and driving recklessly, which caused the initial rollover accident that blocked the slow lane.
