The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently raising awareness about Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. According to the NHTSA, more than 770,000 motorists fall victim to vehicle theft every year. A vehicle is stolen about every 41 seconds in America. While it’s not possible to fully ensure your car can be 100 percent protected from theft, the NHTSA has a variety of great tips to reduce the chances of your vehicle getting stolen.

Don’t Make Your Vehicle a Target

First of all, most theft crimes are crimes of opportunity. This means that thieves are looking for easy situations. They don’t want a lot of barriers to a swift crime. A quick theft with a fast getaway is what they’re after. With that being said, it’s important to always close your windows, lock the doors, park in well-lit areas and take your keys with you when you walk away from your vehicle. Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen, or leave the area while your vehicle is running.

Protect Your Ride

Another great way to help reduce the chances of your vehicle getting stolen is to make sure you have some type of antitheft system installed. Car alarms deter thieves because they loudly call attention to the area when somebody is breaking in. Steering wheel locks and theft-deterrent decals are also great ways to deter thieves. Immobilizing-type devices can also make it next to impossible for a thief to hot-wire your car. Finally, vehicle recovery systems can help law enforcement officers to track down your vehicle in the event it gets stolen.
