8 Outdoor Diners Injured in San Jose Accident

An elderly driver lost control of his vehicle and collided into an outdoor dining area at Grand Century Plaza in San Jose, California. The driver and eight others were transported to the hospital, two with life-threatening injuries.

The tented dining area where the incident occurred was outside Dynasty Chinese, a seafood restaurant in San Jose. While fences were in place to mark the boundaries for diners in the designated seating area, no weighted barriers seem to have been in place to prevent or reduce the impact of the collision.

While still under investigation, it seems the elderly driver of the vehicle may have been “in medical distress prior to the collision,” according to San Jose police. The driver claimed he was trying to park at the plaza when he accidentally accelerated instead. Local law enforcement is looking for witnesses or anyone with more information.

With restaurants being forced to move so much seating outdoors into streets and parking lots, concerns are being raised for diners as exposure to moving vehicles and proximity to the road is increased.
