David W. Scopp
Harris Personal Injury Lawyers decided to spotlight our new office’s leading litigation attorney, David W. Scopp. David resides with his family in Carmel, California and is currently managing our new office in Monterey. David found his passion for personal injury law after a friend was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. When he visited her in the trauma center, she requested his legal assistance. He initially refused and offered referrals because he was an appellate lawyer at the time. The friend told him that she only trusted him, so he had no choice but to assist her. Serendipitously, David had recently met Ryan Harris and teamed up with HPI to help her through this time of uncertainty and pain. He loved the work and was hooked.
Prior to becoming an attorney, David was the Captain of the Middlebury College Swim Team. He earned his juris doctorate from University of San Francisco School of Law. David excelled in law school and graduated cum laude. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the law review, published a law review comment analyzing the constitutionality of the Endangered Species Act, and earned CALI Awards for Excellence (highest grade) in five courses. David has achieved many successes as a lawyer and was recently also named a Super Lawyer Rising Star. The team at Harris Personal Injury Lawyers is very excited to have David on board.
Was there someone who influenced you to be a personal injury attorney?
As a former appellate attorney, I have had a passion for protecting the rights of individuals for a long time. While I enjoyed protecting constitutional rights, I am delighted to now focus entirely on protecting the rights of injured people and their families. Ryan Harris and Jared Salter facilitated this evolution through our work together assisting my first personal injury client. I greatly respected their integrity and excellent advocacy, and that it is a big reason I am here.
What schools did you go to?
I went to Middlebury College for undergrad and the University of San Francisco School of Law for my J.D.
What do you like most about being a PI attorney?
It is a true honor to assist injured people and their families during difficult periods in their lives and to battle the profit-driven insurance companies on behalf of them. I am excited to work at Harris Personal Injury Lawyers, Inc. because the attorneys here share that philosophy.
What are you the most passionate about?
I am most passionate about my family and feel deep gratitude for them. I am also passionately curious, and I love the natural world, travel, and surfing.
What is your philosophy when representing a case?
I see the suffering that injuries cause. Therefore, I treat every client with the same care I would offer my own family, and I do everything I can to get them the compensation they deserve.
Favorite restaurant in Monterey County?
Carmel Poke Co., which is owned by a couple—a local surfer and fisherman and a former owner of a sushi restaurant on the North Shore of Oahu. It has a relaxed vibe for our Monterey surfing community and offers sustainable local seafood and kombucha on tap.
Favorite place to vacation?
My wife and I love to travel and enjoy learning from people around the world. Our most recent trip to Morocco was particularly memorable—the beauty, history, culture, and (admittedly) the waves.
I saw The Who (25th Anniversary Tour) at Candlestick Park with my best friend and mom when I was in Eighth Grade.
A fun fact or something exciting about you or your life/family…
My wife and I have been together for a very long time and have formed a tight community of friends over the years with whom we travel every year to different locations, such as Bend, Croatia, and Bosnia. It is getting harder to fit the friend-family under one roof as our individual families grow, and we love it that way!
