The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about various safety and infrastructure updates coming to roadways across the state. Among these updates is a transition from traditional 4-inch wide highway stripes to 6-inch wide highway stripes. These stripes will help to improve visibility and awareness for motorists in dark conditions and inclement weather. The paint used to make these stripes has reflective beads in it, which will reflect a vehicle’s headlights to make the stripes visible to drivers. These stripes will also help autonomous vehicles to better “see” the lines and stay in their lanes.

Improving California’s Transportation System

The new stripes are being funded by Senate Bill 1, which will invest $5.4 billion a year to improve and fix the transportation system in the State of California. In addition to the wider highway stripes, projects involving new traffic signals and sensors along with road and bridge repairs are also being planned. According to Caltrans, the revenue will allow Caltrans to repair or replace up to 17,00 miles of pavement, 55,000 culverts and drains, 7,700 signals and sensors and 500 bridges over the next 10 years.

Transportation Infrastructure and Roadway Safety

Effective and up-to-date transportation infrastructure is an important part of roadway safety. If roads are in need of repair, they could be dangerous for drivers and vulnerable roadway users like motorcycle riders. While Caltrans is working to make necessary updates and needed repairs on California roads, they’re reminding motorists to remain vigilant and watchful for roadway workers. Distracted driving can endanger the lives of roadway works and other motorists and roadway users.
