The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) just issued a press release about their innovative statewide bicycle and pedestrian plan. The plan, “Toward an Active California,” lays out a variety of policies and actions to support active modes of transportation like cycling and walking. This is Caltrans’ first-ever statewide plan to create an infrastructure to increase cyclist and pedestrian options and safety. Officials with Caltrans are hoping their plan will reduce bicycle and pedestrian fatalities by ten percent each year. They’re also hoping to double walking and cycling trips by the year 2020.

Community Input for Cyclist and Pedestrian Plan

Caltrans has gathered input from community partners across the state to come up with improvements and enhancements to the current pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. One aspect of the plan is to make walking and cycling more appealing options for everyday trips. Thankfully, with the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, there is an additional $1 billion in funds for the active transportation program. In addition to increasing walking, cycling, and safety for those roadway users, there will also be a significant positive impact on the reduction of pollution in the State of California.

Collaborative Effort for Cyclist and Pedestrian Safety

Caltrans has collaborated with a variety of state, local and regional partners to put this plan together. From safety advocates to community members, officials with Caltrans have cast a wide net to come up with a plan that complements current local pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure throughout the state. In addition to improving access and appeal for walking and cycling, the plan will also guide the development of non-motorized transportation facilities and help lead to improved connections for current and future state cyclist and pedestrian areas.
