Caltrans Repairs May Improve Safety on Roads
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about their ongoing efforts to reduce congestion on busy roadways across the state. Caltrans has been implementing ramp metering for busy on-ramps to help manage and address volume and flow of vehicles entering highways and crowded corridors. Reducing congestion with ramp metering is expected to make traffic safer, smoother and more efficient. With funding from Senate Bill 1, Caltrans plans to fix and upgrade 7,700 traffic operating systems across the State of California over the next 10 years. Additionally, they plan to fix more than 17,000 miles of pavement, 500 bridges, and 55,000 culverts or drains.
Ramp Metering and Intelligent Traffic Management
Ramp metering is an important component of intelligent traffic management systems. Caltrans has allocated funds to place these ramp meters in high-volume corridors and highways. The density of traffic is measured by systems to send signals to message signs and other traffic management devices. This can help to adequately handle increased volumes of traffic during busy rush hour periods. Additionally, message signs can give motorists fairly accurate and up-to-the-minute reporting on traffic times and expected travel delays.
Ramp metering is just one aspect of intelligent traffic management systems. New safety technology is being introduced and existing infrastructures are being maintained and repaired. Newly added HOV lanes are also expected to reduce volume and density of traffic on certain busy highways and corridors. Better management of traffic at rush hour can help to improve roadway safety for motorists in California.
