The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has just issued a press release about their efforts to help seniors stay sharp and stay safe. The CHP’s Age Well, Drive Smart program is aimed at assisting seniors across the state in evaluating, maintaining and improving their driving abilities. They offer a variety of tools, resources and educational materials for senior drivers and their loved ones. This important safety program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Older Driver Crash Facts

  • Older drivers, people 65 and up, made up 18 percent of all licensed drivers in 2014.
  • In 2014, an estimated 221,000 older people were injured in crashes.
  • 5,709 older people were killed in wrecks across the nation in 2014.
  • For older pedestrians, 66 percent of fatalities in 2014 happened at non-intersection locations.
  • In 2014, older drivers made up 10.4 percent of the drivers involved in fatal crashes in the State of California.

Age Well, Drive Smart

Because it can be difficult for older drivers to identify, notice or acknowledge how age-related changes can impact their ability to drive safely, the Age Well, Drive Smart program has a self-assessment component. This part of the program helps seniors to identify their own physical, visual and cognitive changes that impact their driving abilities, and it also provides possible corrective options. If you’ve ever had to ‘have the talk’ with an older family member, you know how hard it can be to bring up these issues. The Age Well, Drive Smart programs takes the emotion out of it and gets right to the issue of practical safety behind the wheel.

Elderly Driver Safety in California

The CHP offers free Age Well, Drive Smart classes for senior drivers. In addition to vital self-assessments, older drivers will also be able to refresh their knowledge of California driving laws, and learn skills to evaluate and improve their driving. Contact your local CHP office to find out how to enroll in a free Age Well, Drive Smart class.
