CHP Focusing on Reducing Teen Distracted Driving

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their upcoming efforts to focus on Reducing Teen Distracted Driving. Officials with the CHP are partnering up with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) in efforts to reduce the number of injury-causing and fatal teen traffic-related crashes across the State of California. This ongoing partnership is a grant-funded educational and enforcement program designed to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and other risk factors facing teen drivers on California roadways.

Traffic Crashes Are Leading Cause of Death For U.S. Teens

Sadly, traffic crashes are still the leading cause of death for teenagers in the U.S. According to the CHP, young drivers are three times more likely than adults to be involved in a traffic crash due to distraction. The good news is that these crashes are completely 100-percent preventable. By engaging with teen drivers and getting the word out about the dangers of distracted driving, officials with the CHP and ITD are hoping to make a positive impact on roadway safety for teens and all other motorists and roadway users across the state.

Teen Distracted Drivers Education and Enforcement

This year, the Teen Distracted Drivers Education and Enforcement IX grant campaign will have a multi-pronged approach. There will be a focus on classroom education and community events that are designed to engage with and educate teen drivers and their parents. Additionally, there will be an active enforcement effort targeting distracted drivers throughout California. This yearlong project will be running from October 1, 2019 until September 30, 2020.
