The California Highway Patrol (CHP) just issued a press release about their latest efforts to improve trucking safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. CHP officials are getting ready to distribute face coverings to truck drivers throughout the State of California. In the announcement, the CHP said they are distributing 100,000 face coverings to truck drivers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) supplied the face coverings. As truck drivers are essential workers during this uncertain and difficult time, it’s important that they have the protection they need to do their jobs safely.

Providing Masks to Truck Drivers

These masks, and about 700,000 others, which were supplied to the FMCSA with the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), have been distributed to State Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. The CHP is distributing their allotment of face coverings to 17 commercial vehicle enforcement facilities across the state. The masks will be available at the front counter of enforcement facilities and during other contacts by department commercial vehicle personnel.

Adjusting Essential Supply Chain Industry Safety Standards

We recently reported on the news that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) issued special permits for overweight trucks to transport emergency supplies associated with COVID-19 relief and prevention efforts. Previously, the maximum allowable gross vehicle weight for large trucks was 80,000 pounds, but under the new permit rules, that weight has increased to 88,000 pounds.

San Diego Truck Accidents

Even with safety standard changes and other challenges facing the trucking industry during this time, truck drivers and trucking companies still have to be in compliance with all current laws and regulations associated with traffic safety and trucking. After any kind of accident involving a large truck, it’s a good idea to speak with a Personal Injury lawyer about your case.
