back to school bus safety safest way for students to get to school

CHP on Safest Form of Student Transportation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about school buses being the Safest Form of Student Transportation. Officials with the CHP are currently observing National School Bus Safety Week, which runs from October 21-26 this year. They’re hoping to increase awareness about school bus safety for motorists, parents, teachers and students. In addition to public awareness campaigns, they will also be enhancing their enforcement of motorists who illegally pass school buses throughout the State of California.

School Buses Are Safest Transportation for Kids

School buses are the statistically safest form of transportation for students. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of riding in a car. School buses are one of the most regulated vehicles on U.S. roadways, and they’re designed to be safer than smaller passenger vehicles. That being stated, they’re not completely without risk, so CHP officers are always on the lookout for motorists who are driving dangerously around school zones and school buses.

Vehicles Illegally Passing a School Bus

In 2017, the CHP launched their “Vehicles Illegally Passing a School Bus” (VIPS) enforcement program. During these enforcement operations, CHP officers would actually ride on school buses and patrol bus routes. On these operations, they would be on the lookout for vehicles that don’t stop for the flashing red lights of a school bus. Additionally, the VIPS project also encourages people to report drivers who they see illegally passing school buses. Since the VIPS program started, there have been more than 150 school zone safety operations across the state and nearly 1,200 citations issued.
