CHP Recognizes Safety Communications Professionals
Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are recognizing public safety communications professionals this week. From April 12 to 18, 2015, the CHP will be observing National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. These are the skilled men and women who are responsible for handling public safety communications, like 9-1-1 emergency calls and other non-emergency dispatch calls. If you’ve been in an accident, they’re likely your first lifeline to help.
Public Safety Dispatchers in California
According to the CHP, there are 25 communications centers in California, where more than 900 dispatchers are employed. Last year alone, these professionals handled approximately 9.3 million calls for service. These included calls for car accidents, crimes, fires and other emergencies across the state.
Dispatching Help to Injured Victims
Public Safety Telecommunications professionals dispatch help to injured victims in San Diego and across California. They’re in nearly constant communication with first responders and can send fire, ambulance and other emergency services responders directly to crash scenes. They can also assist with up-to-date motor vehicle information and investigative administrative details to assist officers in the field.
CHP Tips for Handling an Emergency Call
• Try to remain calm.
• Be prepared to give your contact information and location.
• Wait for the dispatcher to ask questions, and answer them as clearly as possible.
• Listen carefully for instructions from the dispatcher.
• If a crime was involved, be prepared to give a physical description of the suspect.
• Never misuse 9-1-1-. It’s for life-threatening emergencies.
After an Injury Accident
After an injury accident in San Diego or along the Central Coast, it’s a good idea to speak with a personal injury lawyer. Your attorney can stay on top of official investigative details and make sure your rights are being protected. If you have been injured or if a loved one has been hurt in a car accident, the sooner you talk to an experienced personal injury lawyer, the better.
