Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a press release about the importance of buckling up for the Memorial Day holiday weekend and all year long. This year, their slogan “Seat Belt Safety Never Takes a Holiday- Buckle Up!” is all about calling attention to the fact that car accidents can happen any-time, any place. Memorial Day weekend kicked off the summer and plenty of road trips on the horizon, the CHP took urgency to remind motorists that they need to buckle up for every trip, every time. It doesn’t matter how far you’re going. A potentially life-threatening car accident can happen anywhere. The CHP conducted their annual Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). While cracking down on seatbelt usage, they were on the lookout for impaired, distracted and dangerous drivers.
Memorial Day Weekend Stats
- 39 people were killed in crashes during the 2016 Memorial Day MEP.
- Two-thirds of the people killed in crashes within the CHP’s jurisdiction during the MEP were not buckled up at the time of the crash.
- During the 2016 Memorial Day MEP, the CHP made 1,065 DUI arrests.
Memorial Day Maximum Enforcement Period
The MEP started at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, May 26 and ran until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 29. There was various checkpoint areas throughout the State of California, as well as increased patrol cars in busy areas. In addition to stepping up efforts to ensure Californians are buckled up, law enforcement officers closely monitored the roadways for any signs of distracted driving, alcohol or drug impaired driving or any aggressive, negligent or dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
Protect Yourself in a Car Accident
The best way to protect yourself in the event of a car accident is to buckle up for every trip. Seat belts are the single most effective piece of automotive safety technology. Parents and caregivers are also reminded to ensure all children are in age and size appropriate car seats at all times. Buckling up saves countless lives each year. Seat belt safety never takes a holiday. Buckle up!
