The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their upcoming efforts to reduce impaired driving across the state. The CHP will be working with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) on the Statewide Impairment Reduction (SIR) campaign. This public safety campaign will run from October 1, 2017, to September 30, 2018. This grant-funded program will allow for additional saturation patrols to crackdown on impaired driving, DUI checkpoints and various traffic safety education efforts throughout the State of California.

Reducing Drunk Driving Crashes in California

According to the CHP, California experienced 663 deaths and 11,061 injuries as a result of drunk driving crashes in the CHP jurisdiction in 2015. Since injuries and deaths caused by drunk driving are completely preventable, officials with the CHP are hoping to make a serious reduction in these needless crashes. Troopers with the CHP will be stepping up their efforts to remove drunk drivers from California roads. Additionally, there will be an aggressive educational campaign to help deter drivers from getting behind the wheel after drinking.

Remaining Vigilant and Making Safe Choices

The CHP is also reminding motorists to call 9-1-1 if they suspect somebody is drunk driving. Be prepared to give a location, direction of travel and vehicle description, so that law enforcement officers can get to and identify that driver as swiftly as possible. It could save a life. With the holidays coming up, safety advocates are also reminding people that it’s never okay to drive home after you’ve been drinking. Buzzed driving is drunk driving, so make the right choice, and get a safe ride home.

Drunk Driving Accidents in California

Crashes involving alcohol or drug-impaired drivers are 100 percent preventable. If you plan on celebrating with alcohol, get a safe ride home. It’s always a good idea to make a plan ahead of time, but even if your ride falls through, don’t get behind the wheel. After any kind of car accident caused by a dangerous or drunk driver, it’s important to speak with a lawyer about your claim.
