The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their upcoming efforts to reduce teen distracted driving. Since teens are one of the most at-risk age groups for distracted driving crashes, the CHP and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) are joining forces to help put an end to these preventable crashes. According to the CHP, 10 percent of all drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. Additionally, the Foundation of the American Automobile Association reported that teens are involved in three times as many fatal collisions as all other drivers based on miles driven.

Focus on the Road Ahead

The CHP and ITD are raising awareness about the dangers associated distracted driving, especially where teen drivers are concerned. Their message is to focus on the road ahead and get where you are going safely. Nothing is as important as paying attention to the roadway and the task of driving. That text can wait, social media will be there when you park, and there is no need to take a selfie behind the wheel. Just pay attention to the road, and get to where you’re going safely.

Inexperience and Inattention Behind The Wheel

Not only are teens some of the most inexperienced drivers on the road, they’re also highly susceptible to distraction. It’s important to understand that phones aren’t the only types of distraction. Additional peer passengers can greatly increase the risk of getting into an injury-causing or fatal crash for teen drivers. Officials with the CHP are hoping to get the word out about a variety of dangers and risks associated with different forms of reckless and distracted driving in the State of California.

Teen Distracted Drivers Education and Enforcement Campaign

The CHP and ITD will be holding various community events with their yearlong grant for the Teen Distracted Drivers Education and Enforcement Campaign. This program will run through September 2018, and it will involve increased enforcement of distracted driving laws and educational community events for teen drivers.
