California Personal Injury LawyersCHP Traffic Safety Improving During COVID

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about the improvement in traffic safety with fewer vehicles on the road during the current COVID-19 pandemic. According to the CHP, with Californians observing the stay-at-home order, the traffic volume across the state is way down. With less traffic, officials are seeing fewer crashes and fewer arrests for driving under the influence. Thanks to a reduction in DUI arrests, injury crashes and fatal truck crashes, roadways in California are safer than they’ve been in a while.

Motor Vehicle and Truck Crashes Down

At this time, preliminary data shows that there was a 75 percent decrease in the number of crashes in California this year from March 19 to April 30, when compared with the same time period last year. Additionally, there has been an 88 percent reduction in traffic crash fatalities and a 62 percent decrease in the number of people injured in crashes. Also, there was a 60 percent decrease in truck-involved crashes, and fatal truck crashes are down 88 percent. Finally, the number of DUI arrests made by CHP officers decreased in March and April from 7,224 in 2019 to 4,223 in 2020. That’s a 42 percent reduction.

Speeding in Excess of 100 Miles Per Hour Up

Unfortunately, not all traffic-related problems are down. With fewer cars on the roadways, some drivers have decided it’s open season for speeding. We’re not talking about a few miles per hour over the speed limit either. We’re talking about very dangerous excessively high speeds. Between March 19 and April 30, the CHP issued 4,000 citations for speeding more than 100 miles per hour. That’s an increase of 113 percent from the same time period last year.
