The California Highway Patrol (CHP) just issued a press release about their upcoming efforts to crack down on drunk drivers this holiday season. CHP officers across the state will be participating in a Christmas Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), as well as enhancing enforcement efforts throughout the rest of the holiday season. In addition to increased enforcement, the CHP also has a ton of great traffic safety tips to help keep motorists safe this season.

CHP’s Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period

This year, the Christmas MEP will start at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24 and will continue until 11:59 P.m. on Wednesday, December 25. Last year, during the Christmas MEP, CHP officers arrested 1,166 motorists for driving under the influence. Even with increased enforcement efforts during the 2018 102-hour holiday enforcement period, 16 people were killed and nearly 350 others were injured in crashes involving impaired drivers in California.

Keeping California Roadway Safe This Holiday Season

Officials with the CHP are encouraging the public to take action if they see dangerous or potentially drunk drivers. If you see a driver that appears to be drunk, dial 9-1-1. Be ready to give a description of the vehicle, location and the vehicle’s direction of travel. The more quickly law enforcement officers can remove dangerous and drunk drivers from the roadway, the safer everybody will be. Listed below are some of the CHP’s Holiday Driving Safety Tips.

CHP’s Holiday Driving Safety Tips

  • Always designate a non-drinking driver if you’re celebrating with alcohol.
  • Practice safe driving habits.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid distractions.
  • Always buckle up.
