The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about a close call involving a big rig that highlights the importance of roadway worker safety. Apparently, a highway crew on northbound Interstate 5 recently had a run in with a semi-truck. Thankfully, the crew had large shielding safety equipment on their attenuator truck. The shield equipment portion of the truck is designed to absorb and minimize potential impact from a collision. It’s supposed to protect the truck and the workers by absorbing the impact of a wreck. A tractor-trailer struck the attenuator truck, but thankfully, only minor injuries were reported on the scene.

Safety Measures in The Field

Attenuator trucks are just one type of safety measure used to protect roadway workers. Signs, personal protective equipment and other types of barrier vehicles are also utilized to help improve safety for workers. The recent incident involving the semi truck shows just how important it is to obey the Move Over Law when passing work crews and vehicles. In addition to moving over for flashing blue lights, you’re also required, by law, to move over for flashing amber lights.

National Work Zone Awareness Week

Officials with Caltrans are calling on motorists to exercise additional caution when driving through work zones. National Work Zone Awareness Week was April 9-13, 2018. During this week, Caltrans was also urging motorists to obey the Move Over Law. Roadside workers deserve to have safe work environments. Move over if you see flashing amber lights. Always obey work zone speed limits, be on the lookout for roadside workers, and of course, never engage in distracted driving behaviors.

Work Zone Accidents in California

Work zones are busy areas. There could be loud machinery, heavy equipment and tons of people working right beside the roadway. In order to keep those people safe, it’s critical to move over a lane when you see flashing amber lights. A work zone accident can result in serious or life-threatening injuries to workers.
