Distracted Driver Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter
On Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office announced the vehicular manslaughter charge being brought against a teen driver who killed on cyclist and severely injured another last November. According to KSBY News Channel Six, the 18-year-old driver, Joseph Mondo, was driving westbound on Nacimiento Lake Drive last November when his phone slid off of his lap.
He reached down to try to pick it up, but had to swerve to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle in front of him. He tried to pick up the cell phone a second time and drifted into the shoulder. He struck two cyclists, and one of them was pronounced dead on the scene. The other cyclist was severely injured in the crash. Mondo’s arraignment is on February 11, 2015.
