A recent article from Consumer Reports found that a safety glitch lets some shared electric scooters exceed local speed limits. Additionally, Consumer Reports was able to replicate the problem on models for rent from Bird and other e-scooter companies. Apparently, this glitch can cause the scooter to have sudden bursts of speed that exceed limits set by cities. The model being impacted by this glitch is the Ninebot KickScooter, which is manufactured by Segway. This model is used by a variety of different shared e-scooter companies.
Scooter Riders Can Experience Unintentional Burst of Speed
A few steps can cause the Segway Ninebot ES4 scooter to rapidly accelerate up to 19 miles per hour. An unsuspecting scooter rider can unintentionally activate this sudden burst of speed. Consumer Reports was able to re-create the glitch on multiple different scooters, and reach speeds of up to 21 miles per hour. Consumer Reports not only re-created the glitch on purpose, but they were also able to re-create it by accident, which could easily take a scooter rider by surprise. Since most cities have a speed cap on e-scooters at 10 or 15 miles per hour, this is a huge safety concern.
Greater Speed Leads to More Serious Injuries
Increasing the speed of an e-scooter can increase the likelihood for more serious injuries in the event of a crash. This is especially concerning in urban and city settings with lots of other vehicles around and busy pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Additionally, very few scooter riders wear helmets or other protective gear, so the likelihood of sustaining a brain injury in a crash could be increased with higher speeds.
