On Friday, an elderly cyclist in Goleta was struck and killed. According to Santa Barbara’s Noozhawk, the incident happened at about 6:30 a.m. on Calle Real near San Mateo Avenue. Roman Paredes, 88 years old, was riding a three-wheeled tricycle when a GMC 2500 truck struck him. The driver of the truck reportedly took his eyes off of the roadway momentarily, and his vehicle drifted into the bicycle lane.

Upon initial inspection, authorities didn’t suspect drugs, alcohol or cellphone usage to be factors in the crash. Although Paredes was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment, he did not survive his injuries. There has been no word on whether or not the driver will be facing criminal charges. The crash is still being investigated at this time. Authorities are reminding motorists of the dangers of distracted driving, whether there’s a cellphone involved or not. The team Harris Personal Injury Lawyers, Inc. sends their deepest condolences to Paredes’ loved ones.
