A woman tried to pass two vehicles on a two-lane road in Escondido and crashed head-on into another vehicle. The woman was identified as Geraldine Ava Hodge. According to Fox Five San Diego, Hodge was driving a Lincoln Town Car on Champagne Boulevard south of the Lawrence Welk entrance when she attempted the passing maneuver. When driving on the other side of the road, Hodge slammed head-on into a Toyota Corolla and another SUV swerved out of the way and crashed down an embankment. Hodge died at the scene of the accident and the occupants of the Toyota Corolla were taken to the hospital with major injuries. Furthermore, two people in the SUV that crashed 150 feet down the embankment suffered moderate injuries.
