On September 13, there was a fatal semi truck crash near New Cuyama. According to Santa Barbara’s Noozhawk, the multi-vehicle wreck happened in the westbound lanes of Highway 166, west of New Cuyama, sometime after 7:30 a.m. The driver of an eastbound tanker truck, 45-year-old Elias Garcia, reportedly crossed over the double yellow line and collided with westbound semi trucks. Garcia was ejected from his vehicle and died on the scene.

In total, there were five big rigs involved in this crash. Garcia’s truck was hauling crude oil at the time of the wreck, and a fuel tank was ruptured in the crash. Between 150 and 200 gallons of fuel was spilled on the scene, and a hazmat crew was dispatched. There has been no word on whether anybody else was injured in this crash or why Garcia’s truck crossed the double yellow line. This crash is still under investigation.
