The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has recently issued a press release about the Freeway Service Patrol (FSP). For those that aren’t familiar with this program, the FSP offers no-cost roadside assistance on certain roadways throughout the state. In combination with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Caltrans and various local transportation agencies, the FSP is able to provide swift and competent no-cost roadside assistance to stranded motorists across California. The FSP program is aimed at maximizing the safety and efficacy of the California freeway transportation system.
Freeway Service Patrol’s Free Roadside Assistance
At this time, the FSP patrols pre-designated roadways on certain congested urban freeways across the state. The program is primarily operated by privately owned tow trucks and other assistance-type vehicles. The FSP is typically out during peak commute hours, Monday through Friday. In construction zones, they’re out all day long, offering swift assistance to broken down motorists to keep shoulders clear and traffic moving freely. It’s also possible to see the FSP out during heavy congestion, midday traffic and on weekends and holidays during peak service times.
Free Roadside Assistance Services
- A gallon of gas for an empty tank
- A jump-start for dead batteries
- Radiator refill or hose taping as needed
- Changing a flat tire
San Diego and Central Coast Service Areas
In addition to serving counties across the State of California, the FSP currently serves freeways in San Diego and Orange Counties, and in Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara Counties. While the FSP can’t tow your vehicle all the way home or to a private repair shop if they can’t get your vehicle going, they may be authorized to tow it to a nearby CHP approved the location. If you’re in need of no-cost roadside assistance from the FSP, dial 5-1-1.
Car Accidents in San Diego
Although drivers with the FSP aren’t trained to respond to car accidents, they can help by contacting first responders and assisting the CHP as directed.
