Graco’s Mismanagement of Car Seat Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently issued a press release regarding the possible mismanagement of the faulty car seat recall by Graco. At this time, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into the timeliness of reporting in the case of defective car seats. We reported on the faulty car seat buckles in July. The defect had to do with the buckles becoming stuck in the latched position which created a dangerous situation in the event of a crash or rescue attempt. Children were stuck in these seats, and some parents had to cut the straps to get them out of the seats.
Largest Car Seat Recall in U.S. History
Earlier this year, the car seat manufacturer recalled over six million car seats. This was the largest car seat recall in the history of the United States, and now questions are being raised about the timeliness of the recall. There is apparently some evidence to suggest that Graco didn’t handle the discovery and initial recall of the defective car seat in a timely manner. If that’s the case, this could be incredibly disturbing news for parents and caregivers across the nation who have trusted the Graco name to keep their babies, toddlers and small children safe.
Implications of a Delayed Recall
As we’ve seen with automaker recalls over the past year, the longer a manufacturer waits to declare a recall, the more lives are put at risk. What’s especially disturbing about this particular situation is that these products are specifically sold to parents to improve the safety of children in the event of a wreck. Instead, these seats were creating another dangerous situation, where a child could have been stuck, unable to be rescued or removed from the seat in the event of an emergency.
