Head and Spine Injuries from Impaired Driving Crashes

KION Central Coast News recently interviewed Doctor Nicholas Slimack, a neurosurgeon with Marian Regional Medical Center, about the dangers of a head and spine injury that can occur as a result of impaired driving crashes. It’s important to note that even seemingly minor accidents can lead to devastating head, neck and spine injuries.

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or penetrating head injury that disrupts normal brain function. The severity of a TBI can range from mild to severe. TBI’s are often accompanied by a brief change in mental status or consciousness, and even amnesia is sometimes reported. What most people don’t know is that a concussion is actually a type of TBI. Even mild concussions can have lasting effects, so it’s important to get a medical evaluation after a car accident. Listed below are just a few of the signs and symptoms associated with a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Signs and Symptoms of a TBI

• Loss of consciousnesses
• No loss of consciousness, but a state of disorientation or confusion
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fatigue or drowsiness
• Sensory problems
• Memory or concentration problems

‘Tis the Season for Impaired Driving Crashes?

Unfortunately, the holiday season is typically known for having a serious increase in impaired driving crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2011, 760 people died as a result of drunk driving crashes in December. Additionally, of the 14,318 people who lost their lives from 2007 to 2011, in the month of December, 29 percent of fatalities involved drunk driving crashes.
