Street racing, vandalism, speeding, driving without licenses, drinking and drug use is causing the city of Santa Maria to close the mall parking lot off of Cook Street after 8:00 p.m. According to KSBY News Channel Six, they’ve had signs up, but those haven’t been stopping the late-night drivers. The city is getting ready to invest $10,000 in barricades, spike strips, signage, a gate and additional enforcement.
At this time, the parking lot is a safety hazard for children and anybody who might be in the vicinity during dangerous driving or racing activities. Community members are hoping that the upgraded security measures will keep street racing and other illicit activities out of the parking lot. The enhanced security projects are expected to be completed by mid-July. Surveillance cameras have also being installed.
