The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently observing Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Throughout the month of May, the NHTSA will be raising awareness about the importance of improving motorcyclist safety and sharing the road. With texting and other distracted driving behaviors on the rise, motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups. In addition to the NHTSA, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and a variety of other public safety and law enforcement agencies in California and across the nation will be working to improve safety for motorcyclists this month.

Improving Personal Safety

Motorcyclists can improve their personal safety in a few very effective and important ways. First, it’s absolutely critical to always wear a helmet. A helmet is the best way to protect yourself in the event of a crash. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been riding for a little while or your whole life. You can’t help how other people drive. Additional protective gear like boots, gloves, and jackets can also improve your safety. Above all, always practice safe and defensive riding techniques, and be vigilant and on the lookout for distracted or potentially impaired drivers.
