New Data on E-Scooter Crashes
It’s no secret that e-scooters have become incredibly popular in places like Pacific Beach and throughout San Diego and the Central Coast. Unfortunately, e-scooter related injuries are also on the rise. ABC San Diego News Channel 10 just reported on a new study revealing data about scooter crash injuries. According to data from the UCSD Medical Center, Scripps Mercy Medical Center and an additional hospital in Austin, Texas, about half of all scooter-injury patients were alcohol-impaired at the time of their crashes. Furthermore, over half of those patients were also drug-impaired.
Studying E-Scooter Crash Injuries
Doctors are seeing spinal cord injuries and brain injuries associated with scooter crashes. Unfortunately, helmet use is still pretty rare among e-scooter riders. The study looked at scooter-related injuries in Level 1 trauma centers between September 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018. It’s important to note that this data may leave out a vast amount of scooter injuries that got triaged to lower-level trauma centers and non-trauma centers.
The Rise in E-Scooter Popularity
While e-scooters have been touted by some as a safer alternative to driving for bar patrons, that’s not exactly the case. If you’re alcohol or drug-impaired, you shouldn’t be operating any kind of vehicle, whether it’s a scooter or bicycle or a larger motor vehicle. Even inebriated pedestrians should take great care to find safe rides home. High speeds and a lack of protective gear are a bad combination with alcohol and drugs, so riders are reminded to never get on a scooter if they’ve been drinking or using drugs.
E-Scooter Accidents in San Diego
Many people enjoy the flexibility and affordability of e-scooters, but it’s important to remember that they are vehicles and they can reach speeds that can lead to devastating injuries if riders are involved in a crash. If you plan to ride an e-scooter, do so as safely as possible. Wear a helmet, observe all safety precautions and never ride if you’re alcohol or drug-impaired.
