The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their annual 4th of July Drive Sober safety campaign. Independence Day is synonymous with barbeque, fireworks, family and friends. Unfortunately, it’s also synonymous with booze. In fact, it’s one of the deadliest holidays on U.S. roadways due to drunk-driving crashes. This year, the NHTSA is calling on drivers to drive sober or get pulled over. They’re also raising awareness about the topic of buzzed driving, which is drunk driving.

2016 Fourth of July Holiday Crash Stats

  • During the 2016 Fourth of July holiday (6:00 p.m. July 2 to 5:59 a.m. July 6), 188 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver.
  • That’s a 28 percent increase from 2015 (146 fatalities).
  • Nearly half of those who died in those crashes involved a drunk driver with a BAC of .15 or higher, which is nearly twice the legal limit.

Plan a Safe Fourth of July Holiday

The NHTSA is urging people to plan ahead for a safe Fourth of July holiday. The most important part of having a safe Independence Day is making sure you have a safe ride home. If you plan on celebrating with alcohol, designate a driver. If you can’t find a designated driver, plan to call a cab or use a ridesharing app like Uber or Lyft. No matter what, don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. Since buzzed driving is drunk driving, it’s important to have a safe ride home even if you’ve only had a little to drink.
