The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is gearing up for National Vehicle Safety Recalls Week. This year, the recalls safety campaign will be running in early March, from the 8th through the 12th. During this week, they will be raising awareness about the importance of checking your vehicle for recalls at least twice each year. They will also be spreading the word about their website and tools to help consumers stay abreast of any recalls on their vehicles in real-time.

The NHTSA has a very easy to use Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Look-Up Tool on their website, and you can even register your vehicle so that you’re notified of any recalls as soon as they arise. Signing up for recall alerts is a great way to automate the twice-yearly task of checking for recalls on their vehicle or vehicles.

Find Your VIN and Use the Lookup Tool

To find the VIN on your vehicle, look on the lower-left area of the windshield on the driver’s side. You might also find it on your registration or insurance card. It will be a 17-digit number, and you can pop that right into the NHTSA’s VIN Lookup Tool. It only takes a minute, and you’ll know whether or not your vehicle is under recall.

If your vehicle is being impacted by a recall, contact a local dealer to schedule a repair as soon as possible. The recall information should tell you whether or not it’s safe to continue driving your vehicle while you wait for the repair. Also, don’t be worried that the appointment will be expensive. Recall repairs are always free.

Defective Auto Parts and Injuries

From exploding airbags to defective tires, recalls are issued when the safety of consumers is at great risk, so don’t take a recall lightly. If your vehicle is under recall, get it repaired as soon as possible and take all recommended precautions to stay safe until the repair has been completed.
