NHTSA Launches Automated Vehicle Test Tracking Tool
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) launch of their online tool to improve safety and testing transparency of automated driving systems. This is a tool that is available to the general public and provides data on the on-road testing of automated driving systems in 17 cities across the country. This gives people more information about the on-road testing and safety performance of these vehicles.
Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing
This tool is part of the Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing (AV TEST) initiative. The initiative was announced earlier this year and is being overseen by the NHTSA. The online platform allows participants to share testing related activities and other safety-related information with the public.
People will be able to access the online mapping tools to see testing at locations throughout the nation. They can look at testing activity data, which can include dates, frequency, vehicle counts and routes. At this time, the tool has data on on-road testing in 17 cities including Austin, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Jacksonville, Orlando, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Learning About Driverless Technology Safety Advancements
Although automated driving systems are not yet available for sale to the general public, safety advocates are hoping that the transparency in the testing program will help to educate people about emerging driverless technologies. Since this technology is still new and evolving, it’s important that members of the public have all the information they need to make informed decisions.
The AV TEST Initiative’s online tracking tool will be available soon, and participants will include departments of motor vehicles, departments of transportation, highway safety offices and city governments.
