NHTSA Launching First National Pedestrian Safety Month
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just issued a press release about their upcoming launch of the first-ever National Pedestrian Safety Month. Since pedestrians are still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups in the U.S., this is a top priority for the NHTSA. Additionally, pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise over the past decade, so it’s critically important to raise awareness about pedestrian safety on U.S. roadways.
Launching Pedestrian Safety Month With a Virtual Event
During the Month of October, the NHTSA as well as other safety advocates and agencies including the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) will be working to educate all roadway users on pedestrian safety in an attempt to reduce pedestrian deaths across the U.S.
The NHTSA will be launching National Pedestrian Safety Month with a virtual event on Tuesday, September 29, at 1:00 p.m. They will be releasing a new tool and resources to improve pedestrian safety, and officials will be discussing recent data and publications. Discussion topics will also include ideas and challenges facing different states and ways to keep pedestrians safe in October and throughout the year.
Everyone is a Pedestrian
In 2016, there were 5,987 pedestrians killed on U.S. roadways, and that was up nine percent from 2015. On average, a pedestrian dies every 1.5 hours in the U.S. Pedestrian safety needs to be on everyone’s radar, whether they’re automobile drivers, cyclists, motorcycle riders or part-time or full-time pedestrians.
This year, the campaign “Everyone is Pedestrian,” is all about raising the awareness that anybody can be a pedestrian. Pedestrians park their cars, walk to work or simply enjoy leisurely strolls in their communities. This philosophy is focused on the fact that pedestrians are truly at the mercy of drivers on the roadways, so motorists need to be aware that pedestrians can be just about everywhere.
