NHTSA on Drunk and Drugged Driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is gearing up for the upcoming Labor Day weekend holiday with their annual anti-drunk and drugged driving campaign. They recently issued a press release about their efforts to get the word out about the dangers of drugged and drunk driving. Sadly, they report that of traffic fatalities involving children, almost one in five involved a drunk driver. Additionally, the Labor Day weekend is one of the deadliest times on roadways in the U.S.

To help combat the drunk and drugged driving epidemic, the NHTSA is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the nation to participate in a high-visibility enforcement campaign. From August 14 through September 2, 2019, law enforcement officers in California and all over the U.S. will be stepping up their efforts to pull over and arrest drunk and drugged drivers.

Plan Ahead For a Safe Ride Home

Whether it’s a holiday weekend or just a regular night, if you plan on consuming alcohol, it’s critically important that you get a safe ride home. The best way to make sure you get home safely is to plan ahead. Don’t wait until the end of the night to try to designate a sober driver. Designate a driver before you start celebrating with alcohol.

When in doubt, have a backup plan too. A good backup plan can be as simple as downloading a ridesharing app like Uber or Lyft to your phone. You can also pre-program a cab company’s number into your phone. No matter what, don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.
