NHTSA Releases Early Estimate of First Quarter Crash Fatalities

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has recently released a brief statistical summary of first quarter fatal crash projections. According to the DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a statistical projection estimates that 7,200 people died in crashes involving motor vehicles in the first quarter of 2013. This number represents a decrease of about 4.4 percent from the statistical projections for the first quarter of 2012. The NHTSA used data supplied from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), Fast-FARS (FF) and Monthly Fatality Counts (MFC). Although it’s too early to tell how accurate these projections are, it certainly provides some insight on potential trends.

Fatality Statistics

• In 2012, 7,530 deaths were projected in the first quarter.
• Fatal crashes in 2011 were at a 60-year low.
• Motor vehicle fatalities declined by over 25 percent from 2005 to 2011.

Implications of the First Quarter Estimates

The NHTSA reports that it’s too soon to speculate on the causation or potential factors involved with these changes in roadway fatality statistics. It’s important to note that this year’s projection is measurably lower than last year’s. Additionally, it’s also important to realize that 2011’s fatal motor vehicle crashes hit a 60-year low. These numbers could possibly be attributed to safety advances in automobiles, increased awareness of roadway safety and tighter regulations and traffic laws.

After a Fatal Accident

These numbers are encouraging, but people still lose their lives on American roadways every day. If you have lost a loved one in a car accident, contact an experienced wrongful death attorney as quickly as possible. It’s important to have an attorney on your side during this difficult time. Families who have lost loved ones in car crashes are potentially facing medical bills, funeral expenses and a loss of income. Ultimately, the biggest loss is that of a family member’s companionship and love.
