The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their summer-long nationwide radio campaign. This safety campaign is geared towards raising awareness about safety issues on U.S. roadways that are particularly prevalent in the summertime. From seat belt use and impaired driving prevention to distracted driving and speed enforcement, these radio ads will be reminding drivers to stay safe behind the wheel all summer long and throughout the year. This year, the radio ads are primarily targeted towards male drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 years old. The campaign will be running from May 23 through June 20, 2020.

Seat Belt Use

Buckling up is the single most effective way to protect yourself in the event of a crash. It doesn’t matter if you’re going across town or on a cross-country road trip, you need to buckle up for every trip. You can’t help how other people are driving, but you can buckle up.

Impaired Driving Prevention

Summertime celebrations like the Fourth of July and Memorial day are unfortunately well known for having an increase in drunk driving crashes. It remains to be seen if the current COVID-19 pandemic will impact the amount of drunk driving crashes that occur on these traditionally busy holiday weekends.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is another issue that the NHTSA is hoping to address with their summer radio campaign. Distractions behind the wheel can come in many different forms, and drivers are being urged to pay attention to the road and to the task of driving. Put your phone in the back seat, on silent, until you get where you’re going, so you won’t be tempted.

Speed Enforcement

Finally, speeding is another important topic that the NHTSA is raising awareness about. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors put drivers at risk of injury causing and potentially fatal crashes. During the pandemic, we’ve seen fewer vehicles on the roads, but those motorists have been driving faster. Fewer vehicles on the road is not an invitation to speed.
