Over the weekend, the Santa Maria Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint on West Main Street. According to KSBY News Channel Six, no DUI arrests were made and only one citation was issued. The checkpoint was held on Saturday evening, from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. More than 350 vehicles went through the checkpoint.
This DUI checkpoint was funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. With the upcoming Labor Day holiday and the summer months coming to an end, law enforcement agencies in California and across the nation are stepping up efforts to reduce the number of injuries causing and potentially fatal drunk driving accidents typically associated with this time of year.
