SMPD’s Distracted Walking Campaign

The Santa Maria Police Department is currently trying to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted walking. They’ve released public service announcements (PSA’s) to help educate pedestrians about the safety risks involved with texting while walking.

KSBY News Channel Six reported on the department’s new PSA’s. Sure, everybody knows that texting while driving is dangerous, but what about texting while walking? Officials with the Santa Maria Police Department are quick to point out that pedestrians are their own best safety advocates.

You can’t always count on drivers to be paying attention. In fact, you shouldn’t. Remaining vigilant while walking is an important part of improving your personal safety as a pedestrian. Not all cars recognize pedestrian safety or give the right of way when they’re supposed to.
