CHP Reports on Lives Saved During Thanksgiving Weekend

Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are pleased to announce the results of two safety challenges issued for Interstate 5 and Interstate 40 over the holiday weekend. During a two-day campaign on I-40, there were no lives lost. Sadly, one person was killed during the four-day campaign on I-5. Overall, 33 people lost their lives in traffic crashes across the state during the holiday weekend.

Interstate Safety

California, along with at least nine other states, joined together over the holiday weekend to raise awareness about driving safe and buckling up. We even reported on the “Buckle up Your Giblets” campaign!

Education and Enforcement to Increase Safety

The CHP had a two-prong approach to stepping up public safety over the holiday weekend. They advertised multiple safety campaigns about dangerous driving habits including speeding, driving under the influence (DUI), distracted driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. Additionally, they also stepped up law enforcement efforts on all of those issues during the Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

The Results

• Statewide, 33 deaths in traffic crashes occurred over the 4 ¼ day period, which represents a 25 percent decrease in fatalities from last year during the same time frame.
• Drunk driving arrests were also down by 9 percent from last year.

A Tragic Loss

Sadly, the lives lost during the I-5 Challenge was that of an unrestrained child in the backseat of a vehicle. Buckling up is the single most effective way to save somebody’s life in the event of a crash. Children especially should be buckled up for every trip, whether it’s across town or across the country. Additionally, small children should always be securely fastened into age and size appropriate child-safety seats. Officials with the CHP are happy to offer free child safety seat inspections and installations too.

Since Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the most traveled holidays of the year, it is also one of the deadliest. Although one life was tragically lost, we’re pleased to hear that the campaigns went so well. The team at Harris Personal Injury Lawyers, Inc. sends their deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the small victim.
