Update: Uber’s Safety Driver is a Felon

Just a few days ago, a self-driving Uber fatally struck a pedestrian in Arizona. News reports have surfaced and confirmed the safety driver, who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, had previously served time in prison. The driver, Rafael Vasquez, spent more than four years in prison for two separate felony convictions.  The video inside of the autonomous vehicle was also released and shows the backup driver in the vehicle alternately glancing down and at the road, then reacting with shock just before the collision, ABC Seven News. However, the driver, Rafael Vasquez, did pass Uber’s screening/background checks.
