On Monday, September 26, a woman exited her vehicle in the center divider of the Interstate 5 to look for spare change and was ultimately killed. Apparently, this woman decided to search for coins on this part of the freeway where she had recently picked up trash during her prior Caltrans community service excursion. Patch specified that the collision happened around 3 p.m. Monday on southbound I-5 near Route 78 in Carlsbad. The driver, from Escondido, stopped her car to let her passenger exit and begin the coin search. CHP stated, “At the same time, a 41-year-old man from El Cajon who was driving his 2016 Toyota 4Runner southbound on I-5 lost control of his vehicle and veered into the center divider, where his vehicle struck the pedestrian.” The woman was badly injured and was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where she was then found dead.
